in Lifestyle

Garlic is a member of the bulb family. This vegetable is included in most of our recipes or eaten in its raw form. Containing antibacterial and antiviral properties, garlic has many health benefits that you may not know about.

1. Prevent cancers

According to a study by the Jiangsu Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention in China, eating raw garlic can potentially decrease the risk of lung cancer by 30 percent for those who smoke and 44 percent for those who don’t smoke. Meanwhile, another study by the National Cancer Institute discovered that consuming 10 grams or more of garlic per day is associated with a statistically significantly lower risk of prostate cancer. Additionally, daily intake of this vegetable has been found to reduce the risk of breast cancer among women.

What’s more, garlic can shrink tumors. It can decrease the risks of bowel tumors by as much as a third, according to a study by at the University of South Australia.

2. Reduce blood pressure

Apart from lowering the risk of most types of cancer, garlic helps control blood pressure. It contains Allicin, which blocks the activity of angiotensin II - a protein that helps the blood vessels contract thereby increasing the blood pressure. Besides, garlic has the polysulphides, which are converted into hydrogen sulphide to dilate the blood vessels and control blood pressure.

3. Lower cholesterol

Garlic can prevent cancers and reduce blood pressure but its health benefits don’t stop there. The vegetable is able to moderately lower your blood triglycerides, total cholesterol as well as arterial plaque formation. However, the cholesterol-lowering effects of garlic are not the same for all people as it is more likely to produce beneficial effects on cholesterol in women and in people with diabetes or heart disease.

4. Protect heart

Garlic is among the best vegetables to protect your heart from the damaging effects of free oxygen radicals and cardiovascular problems like heart attacks and atherosclerosis. That is because the sulphur-containing compounds of garlic help prevent the blood vessels from becoming blocked and slow the development of atherosclerosis.

5. Fight against allergies

Garlic has anti-inflammatory properties that help your body fight against allergies. It may be used to immediately stop the itching due to rashes and bug bites, too.
